Description

The serene Shiva sculpture is located deep inside a rock cut cave at Elephanta island near Mumbai. It dates back to the mid 5th - 7th century CE. I was amazed how skilfully the artisans depict the serene expression in the very hard basalt rock. With very low available light and no tripods permitted, I had to photograph it handheld, with a digital SLR camera.
