The sculpted column is located deep inside a rock cut cave at Elephanta island near Mumbai. It dates back to the 5th -7th century CE. The pillar has exquisite, uniform vertical lines beautifully carved in the hard basalt stone. At the bottom is a Ganesha statue in a cross-legged sitting posture. With very low available light and no tripods permitted, I had to photograph it handheld, with a digital SLR camera.
Sanjay Marathe is a photographic artist with over 30 years experience. He blends technique and creative vision in his landscapes, cityscapes and nature themes. Born in 1966 in Mumbai, he grew up in Kanpur and Mumbai in India. His journey with photography began in the age of film cameras at the young age of thirteen, evolving from a hobby into a lifelong passion. He got a degree in commerce and secured an admit to the Govt. law college in Mumbai. But when he realized that photography was in his heart, he gave up law study and chose to persue his passion. After a successful thirty-year career in commercial photography, Sanjay decided to focus on photography as art. He developed a unique style that seamlessly blends photographic technique...
